Sacramento Regional Transit is addressing the concerns of residents and businesses affected by the new S700 low-floor light rail vehicles' warning bells. The digital "bell" sound, which is designed to mimic the mechanical bell of the legacy fleet, has been found to be more pronounced and disruptive than anticipated. The S700 vehicles, which entered service in fall 2024, feature speakers mounted on every cab, chimming twice every second with sustained notes. The sound is intended to match the mechanical bell, but its higher pitch has caused issues for nearby neighborhoods. To address this, the RT Board has approved changes to the speaker configuration, ensuring all safety requirements are met while significantly reducing noise impacts.
The modification involves removing the sound from some cabs, with the buzzer now sounding only from the operating and trailing cabs. This approach aims to minimize noise to the lowest possible levels allowed under California Public Utilities Commission requirements. The cost of the new speaker configuration will decrease to $324 from $430 per train for future low-floor vehicles.
RT estimates the speaker updates will be completed between late July and mid-August, with no impact on service.
