Construction Updates: World's First Artificial Energy Island (2026)

The world is witnessing a groundbreaking development in sustainable energy infrastructure with the construction of Princess Elisabeth Island, the first-ever artificial energy island. The Princess Elisabeth Zone, which encompasses the island, is set to host three offshore wind sites with a combined capacity of up to 3.5 GW. This zone will be connected to the island's infrastructure, facilitating the efficient transmission of electricity generated by these wind farms.

The tender process for the first lot, which is planned to accommodate a 700 MW offshore wind farm, began in November 2024. However, there has been a slight delay in the procurement process. Initially expected to be announced in December 2025, the Belgian Council of Ministers decided to postpone the tender for the Princess Elisabeth Zone I site, with the procurement now scheduled for 2026.
